Waseem Saeed is a UK Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgeon and previous Honorary Lecturer at the University of Leeds and Manchester Medical Schools.
His is actively involved in surgical limb salvage after major earthquakeswork and has been the lead plastic surgeon on 5 humanitarian missions representing the UK.
Waseem Saeed is a full member of the Bristish Society for Surgery of the Hand and the Britsih Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons.
He is part of the teaching Faculty for the Surgery in the Austere Environment Course at the Royal College of Surgeons, London, UK.
The cerebral palsy clinic is now located at The Harley Street Clinic Children’s Hospital in London. Patients in the North can also be seen at the Spire Manchester Hospital.
In 1998, at the end of my plastic surgical training, I spent a year at the Kleinert Institute for Hand and Microsurgery in Kentucky, USA – an internationally renowned centre for specialist training in hand surgeryIt was there that I attended a clinic specialising in the treatment of children and adults affected by cerebral palsy of the arms. I was inspired by the way these apparently useless hands could be made to work.On my return and appointment in 1999 as Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at St. James’s University Hospital, Leeds, I was determined that I would develop this expertise in the UK, where like the rest of the world, cerebral palsy is the commonest developmental cause of hand disability and yet also the most under-treated.
I carefully analysed what we know on the subject in scientific journals and mainstream textbooks on surgery for spasticity of the upper limb and developed a protocol for treating my patients. I first published this in 2003 Over 13 years I have treated many patients fine-tuning the surgical procedures and treatment protocols. . My clinic introduced early movement after surgery to maximise function and this is increasingly being used throughout the world now.
